Stephanie Cooper (now Stephanie Martin) has been a personal training client of mine at Norcal for just over 3 years. She came in, possibly a bit intimidated, but anxious to reach her weight loss goals of getting in shape and feeling comfortable in her maid-of-honor dress for her sister’s wedding. With hard work and dedication she achieved that goal in just months. As you will read in her Q&A below she fell off the wagon a bit after her sister’s wedding, but jumped back on several months later to once again achieve a weight loss goal, but this time for her own wedding. As her coach, it was great to see the difference in Stephanie’s attitude toward her goal the second time around. She had gone from a goal of strictly losing weight to look good in a dress to now realizing that this is lifestyle. We don’t just eat clean and exercise to look good and to reach goals for certain occasions. She transformed her outlook of what health and fitness really mean. Yes, it is nice to “look good naked” as Robb would say, but more importantly it’s about be healthy. Stephanie has done just that. Of course, there have been ups and downs… and there will probably be more as it’s part of the journey. But as a whole Stephanie is a model client in that she has changed her life for the better and understands WHY she is doing this.
Here’s a little more about Steph!
When did you start at Norcal?
3 years on February 21st!
How did you hear about it?
My mom had heard about Norcal through a friend.
What was your first impression?
My first impression of the gym was that everyone is like family. I felt extremely comfortable right away, unlike most other gyms that I had gone to that just made me feel out of place.
What were your goals coming in? Have you achieved them?
My goals coming in were just to lose weight but now it is definitely to just be healthy! I achieved my goal for my wedding on December 7th but need to get back on track now to keep that goal up.
What was the hardest part of your journey thus far?
The hardest part has been staying on track when life gets busy and not eating candy. I love sour candy.
When you’ve had/have struggles with staying motivated or accountable, what have you done/do you do to get back on track?
I just try and tell myself that I’m not doing this to just lose weight I’m doing it to be healthy.
What is your favorite movement? Least favorite?
Deadlifting is probably me favorite as for least favorite I would have to say PLANKS!
What is your favorite paleo meal?
My go to meal is Curry chicken from the Everyday Paleo cookbook. I just throw everything in the crock pot and we can eat on it for a couple days.
What is your most memorable workout at Norcal?
I would have to say the 12 Days of Christmas workout this last year and when my sister came with me for my last wedding workout!
Can you explain your change in mindset from wanting to lose weight to wanting to be healthy?
When I first started at the gym it was all about losing weight for my sister’s wedding. I reached my goal for the wedding but after it was over I gained most of the weight back, I felt horrible and tired all of the time. Remembering how I felt right before the wedding made me realize doing this isn’t just about the weight lose. It’s about being healthy and maintaining that health!
What advice do you have to others that may be contemplating to take their next step toward a healthier them?
Have fun doing it! I love trying new recipes and doing different workouts at the gym. Don’t think of it as a chore or something you have to do!
Stephanie has lost a total of 39.8lbs and is happier and healthier than when she walked in the doors of Norcal 3 years ago. I’m so proud of you Steph!
