Do you like conspiracy theories? I do, totally love them. Area 51 & Aliens, The Tri-Lateral commission, The idea that John Travolta is not gay…the wackier, the better. Perhaps this is why it was not hard for me to embrace the idea that high carb diets are responsible for everything from cancer to depression to heart disease. Here’s the premise: The government (including the CSU Chico Nutrition Department) recommends a grain based diet. The result? We all get fat, sick and depressed, we are put on statins and antidepressants while waiting for gastric bypass…it’s just sooo damn JUICY! Unfortunately for us, this is no conspiracy, it’s a fact. Our Government, including our esteemed institutions of higher learning, is in cahoots and trying to kill us. Eh, oh well! What’s life without a few challenges, no? I’ll do more mad raving about our food later, but today I want to look at another bit of bullocks we have been fed: The heel-toe running style and the related topic of shoes.

When a weekend rolls around and I actually have a minute to breath, one of my favorite things to do is head down to the Chico Farmer’s Market on Saturday. I have had a rather unusual experience with a certain farmer--that is--well--laugh-out-loud funny.

Hi everybody!
How y’all feeling? Training hard? Eating right? SLEEPING enough?
If you haven’t noticed the trainers (torturers?) at CrossFit NorCal ASK you how you are feeling, how you are doing on your food, and frequently, we ask about sleep. Now part of this borders on small talk, some of this is just an opportunity to check in with folks and see how everyone is doing and what is new, but a BIG part of this is to actually know HOW you are doing. We have slowly beaten into most of our clients the need for consistency in training and solid nutrition to kick-ass and look good naked. One or two of you have even heeded our advice and you actually try to sleep more than the standard 4-5hrs per night most of our Type-A’s attempt to get by on. That phrase in itself is quite telling “Get By”. How many things in life are truly good when we “just get by”? Not too damn many.

Congrats to Shawn and Chrissy on the arrival of their new little baby boy! Kayden Gower arrived Monday at 12:16pm. Chrissy was an absolute champ in the delivery room! I am so proud of her! Words cannot describe how strong she was and how hard she worked! Oh, and props to Shawn for not passing out...he wins all bets!

Our business and the community of athletes we train is much like a large family. Love, sweat, maybe a little bit of blood (too many pullups) and some occasional tears. Everyone pushes hard, everyone shares in the joys and successes and even the sorrows and frustrations. So, I’m going to share…

I have become—out of necessity—a crock-pot junkie. Several years ago my Mom dumped hers on me—you all know the one—it is an awful shade of 1980’s brown, and peeling from the side is a faded, baked-on strip of masking tape with our last name. As if anyone else would take home this lovely piece of cookware?

When was the last time you “played?” Play is an essential part of the human experience, one that unfortunately is all too often forgotten once we do that silly little thing called “grow up.”
It is vitally important to interject some play activities into your training. Folks invariably get too focused on regimentation and volume, i.e. I need to do more, more, more!
While having goals and a plan for achieving them is a must, it is crucial also to be leisurely, relax, and play! The folks that are successful at maintaining a playful approach to their training and their lives are happier and more successful across the board.
We had some fun playing around on the baccar ladder on Monday night. Check out some pics!
