Food Pyramid Scam

I’m sure y’all have heard of a pyramid scam before. Hopefully you are the grand-poo-bah on the top and you manage to get some poor schmucks in beneath you and the road to riches is paved!

Nicki’s family has dabbled in this stuff (you Quixtar relatives know who you are!) but no harm, no foul. Perhaps the largest pyramid scam ever has been run on the American public (that’s you and me BTW) in the form of the Food Guide Pyramid...which to make it warm and snuggly, has been renamed to My Pyramid. Here are a few interesting things to ponder: the base of the pyramid is whole grains. Whole grains were not widely consumed for almost ALL of human existence. There is VERY compelling evidence to suggest the consumption of this “staple” food is completely at odds with health. But what about vitamins, minerals..and fiber!? What will we do without grains for fiber?! How will we make poopy? Well folks, there are these other things called fruits and vegetables which contain vitamins, minerals...AND fiber. Eat these things and you can make poopy. But won’t you come up short nutritionally by eating a paleo diet? Well...no, and in fact it will be about as nutritious a diet as one can eat. Check this paper out.  It’s from Prof. Loren Cordain from Colorado State University and it looks at what the nutritional characteristics are of a diet built on meat, fish, veggies, fruit and nuts. If you notice in the nutritional breakdown, it is far more nutritious than our modern, grain based diet. Kinda surprising, no?

A few things I like to remind folks of if they are a bit incredulous about the nutrition we recommend:
1-We advocate simple, unprocessed foods.
2-We recommend essentially one nutritional supplement, fish oil. We like the Costco brand.
3-Try this approach for a month...if you do not feel dramatically better, you can always go back to Little Debby snack cakes and Ezekial bread. Just give it a shot.

As much as I first protested against what I thought to be dietary heresy I gave the Paleo diet a go.  I eliminated the grains both processed and refined and have my sugar addiction under control. When I get hungry between meals I’ll have a protein shake with unsweetened almond milk, Designer whey protein powder and a liberal amount of fruit thrown in.  If I can’t get to the blender some raw almonds will suffice.  I don’t miss the “old days” and I have found my recovery from workouts is better and my general quality of life is much improved.  Oh yes my methane output rating is way down!  I do take my fish oil tablets religiously.  As one of the older Crossfit participants I welcome any advantage I can get!

It amazes me how many “fitness experts” still buy in to the Atkins diet despite all the research to the contrary.

Still though, thanks for keeping me from mistakenly taking this gym seriously
