Ring in the New Year….CrossFit Style!

Before you head out tonight for some merry making--head in to the gym!

Paleo Challenge 2010!!

It’s that time of year...we all have indulged in the festivities of the holidays (not to mention those fresh baked holiday treats). Are you ready to get your nutrition focused and head back into the gym?

Handstand Progressions Part 4

In the gym--handstands are used as part of our strength circuit, in a WOD, or, occasionally for a fun finisher at the end class.  You should be working toward a freestanding handstand away from the wall, a static hold handstand on the wall, and ultimately a handstand push-up.  This final post on Handstand Progressions is the combination of the skill of kicking up on to your hands---and the strength of holding and pressing in and out of a handstand.  Just like getting your first pull-up, getting your first true handstand push-up is a pretty awesome feat....one that takes lots of attempts, and a whole lot of patience.

A True Christmas gift

It has been a year filled with firsts.  Your first workout in years, your first 400 m run without stopping, your first pull up, or your first muscle up. Health is a gift that keeps on giving, day in and day out. It may not come wrapped in a lavish box with ribbons and bows or a stocking hung by your chimney, but this gift will bring you more happiness on more occasions than we will ever realize. This gift was earned.

Some OLY video and holiday schedule update!

Here’s some video of our good friend Dutch Lowy competing at the 2009 American Open a couple weeks ago.  Weightlifting athletes get ready to compete! We will be taking a team of our athletes to some weightlifting meets in the spring of 2010!  Hopefully Santa is good to my lifters this year and remembers to bring OLY shoes!  Oh and maybe an elf will remind Santa that Fish needs some socks that aren’t pink smile

Squashed!

Lately I’ve been strolling through the produce aisle and my attention will be drawn to a miscelaneous display of squash.  I’ll circle the display...move away...move back.  I contemplate the oddly shaped, exotically colored vegetable, and more oft then I not I will throw one in my cart...no particlular selection process...whichever one happens to speak to me.  However at some point I’ll think “What the heck do I do with this?!”.  So I’ll toss it back on the pile and grab some standard boring veggie and be on my way.  Don’t be intimidated!  Grab a sqaush and get cooking.

The GOAL Board

I am all about having my back to the wall right now.  When I find my self heading over to the water cooler to fill my canteen I sort of rotate my body so that my back is to the Goal Board.  With my back to the wall I can all together avoid finding my name...and reading my two unmet goals.  As if they might have changed since the last time I looked at them!  Does this sound familiar to you too?

International Fast Food

I recently returned from a 10 day visit with my parents who are living in Taiwan for a year while my Mom teaches English.  As I prepared for my trip my Dad warned me to practice eating with chop sticks because forks were rarely available.

Handstand Progressions Part 3

In the previous two handstand progression blogs, the drills we have been practicing are designed to develop the skill of performing a handstand.  Check out the previous two blogs to get some ideas on how to work on balance and free standing handstands.  Once you feel comfortable kicking into a freestanding handstand--kicking up to the wall to work on handstand strength is a piece of cake!

Gluten Free Orange Cake

This tasty little cake was my favorite of the three recipes that client Christina C. delivered to the trainers.  She modified the recipe from one she found on one of our favorite gluten-free sites...Elana’s Pantry.
