De-Mystifying Acupuncture

Several months ago Jenny posted a blog about Chico Community Acupuncture. In early May we had Oliva Peters-Lazaro come do a brief presentation on how on how her practice works and specifically how acupuncture can help our clients.

I’m continually amazed at how the human body functions.  After receiving multiple treatments from Olivia, I was pleasantly surprised by how much better my body was handling the typical ‘aches and pains’ that result from working out.  In addition, some chronic skin issues have subsided.  I decided to investigate a little on my own to learn how acupuncture, a practice that is thousands of years old, is REALLY working.

According to Chris Kresser, a licensed acupuncturist and the author of The Healthy Skeptic,  acupuncture is working to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and restore homeostasis.  Kresser attributes these outcomes to the fact that acupuncture:

  • Promotes blood flow
  • Stimulates the body’s innate healing mechanisms
  • Releases natural painkillers
  • Reduces the intensity and perception of chronic pain
  • Relaxes shortened muscles
  • REDUCES STRESS

She was both a competitive gymnast and swimmer and these activities led into coaching jobs as she earned her degree in physical education. Natalie is a graduate of the Chico State teaching credential program and has been teaching physical education or coaching for nearly 20 years.
