My response: You want to minimize the use of that stuff in day to day training. We are trying to make you a fat burning machine…this is what separates an elite endurance athlete from an also-rans. To do this we run you lower carb (paleo_ most of the time…we want to save stuff like cytomax for TESTING and RACING. Keep in mind we are focused on QUALITY and INTENSITY. The concepts are tightly related and it is antithetical to the current wisdom in endurance athletics which focuses exclusively on more, more, more. You cannot have...read more
Now that is fantastic stuff but I’m going to take a moment a brag about Angela and her history at NorCal. Angela was a John Fragoso referral. She was “another” injured endurance athlete who needed some strength work, food tweaking and some good ol’fashioned CrossFit love! She started working with Nicki and two AMAZING things happened right off the bat. Nicki suggested that Angela adopt a paleo diet to help decrease her systemic inflammation AND Nicki suggested that Angela take a hiatus from long runs for a few months to allow herself...read more
Nicki’s family has dabbled in this stuff (you Quixtar relatives know who you are!) but no harm, no foul. Perhaps the largest pyramid scam ever has been run on the American public (that’s you and me BTW) in the form of the Food Guide Pyramid…which to make it warm and snuggly, has been renamed to My Pyramid. Here are a few interesting things to ponder: the base of the pyramid is whole grains. Whole grains were not widely consumed for almost ALL of human existence. There is VERY compelling evidence to suggest the consumption of...read more
When preparing for the unknown and the unknowable it’s sometimes nice to work in a little bit of chaos! This is in pretty stark contrast to the straight lines and known quantities that typify the globo gym experience. For the uninitiated CrossFit can look like a loosely controlled riot or a three ring circus. Oddly enough folks seem to like this alot…possibly even love it. New challenges and a constantly changing environment keep things fresh, exciting and interesting. Doesn’t everyone want to run away and...read more
to our men and women in the armed forces. Your jobs are always tough and the thanks is often slim or fleeting. I’ve spent a good part of the day thinking about those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country, in fact, for all of us. We live in an amazing place, during amazing times…soooo much to be thankful for. Thank you seems an anemic offering, but it is sincere and honest. Here are some thoughts on Memorial Day from our friends at CrossFit Redding. Share this...read more
Nicki went 4 for six on the day with a 48kg. snatch and a 66kg clean & jerk! WoooHO! Nicki did great considering this was her first meet and she has been nursing a case of “abdo”. Our other NorCal tough-chick was Veronica Carpenter who took 3rd place in her division and also qualified for Nationals with this performance. Veronica and Nicki have been training together the past few months and I think the consistency paid of for both girls. A HUGE thank you to the folks at FIT Barbell and especially Brent who helped us to warm...read more
